Nymphs are a dark brown, grey colour, and undergo 6 moults before reaching adulthood. Once mature, adults are a rich terracotta brown colour, with adult males being sexually dimorphic and possess large, pointed horns on their pronotum.
 
One of the largest cockroach species, often reaching between 5 - 7.5cm at maturity. These hissers are native to the island of Madagascar, off the African mainland.
They are fantastic pets for children, first-time or novice cockroach owners, due to their low maintenance and minimal care requirements. Despite their intimidating appearance, Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches are gentle and docile - meaning they can be handled, making them great additions to any exotic pet collection. With a rare ability to make a hissing noise (produced by pushing air out through spiracles or 'breathing holes') and impressive size, these cockroaches are truly captivating.
 
Hissers have a symbiotic relationship with a species of mite, Gromphadorholaelaps schaeferi, which are believed to keep the exoskeleton clean of certain debris. So, if you notice small mites on your hissing cockroaches, leave them be! 
 
The nymphs and adults feed mainly on leaf litter and decaying wood. Additional supplements such as vegetables, fruits  and fish food should be offered as part of their balanced diet.
 
*(Gromphadorhina sp is a hybrid species which include wide-horned  hissers (G. oblongonota) with G. portentosa, and G. oblongonota being the most common in the pet trade, and these species commonly interbreed creating hybrids).
